The Great Gatsby

            The book, “ The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a classic book that takes place in the 1920s. It’s about a young man’s emotional story after moving to New York. His name is Nick and he narrates the book the whole way through. In his younger years, he moved out to New York from the Middle West of the country to start a job at a bond company in the city. He rented a small home on Long Island, specifically at a part called East Egg.

 One night he was invited to his second cousin, Daisy and her rich husband, Tom’s home across the river in West Egg. There he was introduced to a lady by the name, Miss Baker. A few nights later a man came knocking on his door, he had come from his neighbor, Gatsby’s large house with an invitation to one of Gatsby’s parties, specifically from Mr. Gatsby himself. It was a surprise to Nick because people usually never got invitations to Gatsby’s parties, they simply just showed up; and hundreds of them would. Gatsby was a mysterious man, many myths floated around about him. At the party Nick met Miss Baker and right then his relationship with not only Miss Baker but with Gatsby himself, started. Gatsby sent a message to Nick through Miss Baker. In it Gatsby told Nick that he was really in love with Daisy, Nick’s cousin, they were both deeply in love before Gatsby was sent to war and Daisy was married. She forgot about Gatsby, after not hearing from him for five years but Gatsby never forgot about her. He threw his parties in hope of some day bumping into Daisy at one of them.

 Nick was able to get the two to see each other for the first time in years, but Gatsby’s dreams might have been to big, for they weren’t easy, obviously he couldn’t just run away with the lady, she was married. Gatsby was introduced to Daisy’s husband, Tom one day when, they as well as Daisy, Nick and Miss Baker went out to the city. Tom could see the relationship between his wife and Gatsby from the very beginning and they traded cars, Gatsby taking Daisy and from then a mutual war started between Tom and Gatsby. What only Nick and Miss Baker knew was that Tom had a “woman” married to a friend of his named Wilson that owned a garage on the way to New York. That day he pulled up to get gas in Gatsby’s car; his “woman” noticed the car. That night when Gatsby drove with Daisy home, he let Daisy drive, on the way there, Mrs. Wilson ran out to stop the car thinking that it was Tom. Daisy ran over her and kept driving. Of course as he told Nick, Gatsby was going to take the blame to save his love of troubles. Mrs. Wilson was killed instantly and the next day a crazy Mr. Wilson went out to kill the driver and after figuring out, presumably from Tom that Gatsby owned the car, he killed him with a handgun just as he was going for a swim.

The next part of the story is the one that teaches the most of the lessons in the story. Daisy left with Tom after hearing of Gatsby’s death and without telling anybody they left. Nick was the only one at Gatsby’s funeral except for Gatsby’s father and one other man. The thing that is infuriating to me is that people used to line up in hundreds to attend Gatsby’s parties but at his death nobody seemed to care. Life moved on and so did this so called “Gatsby” that everybody made up stories about. Gatsby was killed for something he didn’t do. For five years he worked to build a huge beautiful home for the love of his life, he spent years trying to find her and in the end he was killed because of something that she did. But even then it didn’t seem to hit her what Gatsby had been doing for her this whole time. She continued with her life and moved out West. This shows and teaches that sometimes you can work so hard for someone or something and in the end it’s not even worth it. After reading this book I can predict and say that Gatsby was a man with big dreams but his dreams didn’t end. He knew he wanted to find Daisy but his dreams didn’t add up; there wasn’t an ending to what would happen when he did find her, maybe that was because he thought it was going to be impossible. This book really tells a story that tests the loyalty between the relationship of two people.

“The Great Gatsby" is a very emotional book, the plot gets you hooked and you feel as if your part of the story. As I already mentioned Gatsby’s death infuriated me, I felt as if I was Gatsby. This book is great it’s so strong that your dragged right into the character’s shoes from the start.
